| During a survey at six stations in the Dover Strait, from July 1990 to November 1991, water samples were collected to measure : suspended sediment load and its organic content; particle characteristics; photosynthesis pigments; and heavy metals. In this contribution, particle measurements are interpreted in terms of hydrodynamical effects and seasonal evolution. Multi-modal grain size spectra are indicative of depth and cross-sectional variations, from die coastline to the central waters. Tidal variations, biological productivity and wind effects can be identified. | The structuration between nearshore and offshore waters along the macrotidal French Eastern Channel coast is demonstrated by longitudinal and vertical continuous recordings of salinity, temperature, turbidity and fluorimetry. The distribution of suspended particulate matter, one dissolved marker ( super(125)Sb) and particulate markers (such as diatoms) indicates the variability of the waters from coast to open sea. Semidiurnal and semilunar tidal cycles induce the birth and the evolution of frontal structures along shore-lines with or without estuaries. The hydrodynamic consequences for suspended matter fluxes are presented. |

| The phosphorite levels present in the ODP cores of the Oman margin are of two types: (a) sediment levels dominated by phosphate grains with a few white to light-brown nodules; these are sandy and predominantly occur in Upper Miocene to Early Pliocene sediments; and (b) sediment levels poor in phosphatic grains but consisting of several brown to dark-brown nodules; these mainly occur in Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene sediments wherein some levels are sandy while others are clayey. The phosphate grains occur as coprolites, faecal pellets, spherical and coated grains, micronodules, foraminifer infillings and bone fragments.
